തനിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട തന്റെ മകനെ ദൈവത്തിന് വേണ്ടി ബലികൊടുക്കുവാന് തയ്യാറായ പൂര്വ്വ പിതാവായ അബ്രഹാമിന്റെ ജീവിത മാതൃകയില് നിന്നും പ്രചോദമുള്കൊണ്ട്, ദൈവത്തിനായി തന്റെ ജന്മദേശമായ കാപ്പാഡോസിയ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ജെറൂസലേമിലേക്ക് തീര്ത്ഥയാത്ര നടത്തിയ ആളാണ് വിശുദ്ധ തിയോഡോസിയൂസ്. അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹം ലോന്ജിനൂസ് എന്ന ദിവ്യ മനുഷ്യനെ തന്റെ വഴികാട്ടിയായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. അദ്ദേഹം തിയോഡോസിയൂസിനെ ബെത്ലഹേമിന് സമീപമുള്ള ഒരു ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ മേല്നോട്ടക്കാരനായി നിയമിച്ചു. എന്നാല് തിയോഡോസിയൂസ് അവിടെ അധികകാലം തങ്ങിയില്ല, അദ്ദേഹം സമീപമുള്ള പര്വ്വതത്തിലെ ഒരു ഗുഹയില് തന്റെ വാസമുറപ്പിച്ചു.
അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ വിശുദ്ധി നിമിത്തം പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുകയും, ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനു കീഴില് ധാരാളം പേര് ദൈവത്തിനായി തങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതം ഉഴിഞ്ഞുവെച്ച് കൊണ്ട് സന്യാസ ജീവിതം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കാത്തിസ്മസ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് ഇദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ആശ്രമം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചു, കൂടാതെ രോഗികള്ക്കും, പ്രായമേറിയവര്ക്കും, മാനസികരോഗികള്ക്കുമായി മൂന്ന് ആശുപത്രികളും ഈ വിശുദ്ധന് സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ‘ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ഏക ഭാവം’ എന്ന വിശ്വാസ രീതിയായ യൂട്ടീക്ക്യന് വിശ്വാസ രീതി സ്വീകരിക്കാത്ത ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളെ അനസ്താസിയൂസ് ചക്രവര്ത്തി അടിച്ചമര്ത്തി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത്, വിശുദ്ധ തിയോഡോസിയൂസ് പലസ്തീനായിലുടനീളം യാഥാസ്ഥിതിക ക്രിസ്തീയ വിശ്വാസ രീതി പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചു.
ജെറുസലേമിലെ പ്രസംഗ പീഠത്തില് വെച്ച് വരെ വിശുദ്ധന് “നാല് പൊതു സമിതികളേയും നാല് സുവിശേഷങ്ങളായി സ്വീകരിക്കാത്തവന് ആരോ, അവന് ശപിക്കപ്പെട്ടവനായിരിക്കും” എന്ന് പ്രസംഗിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. കൂടാതെ,ചക്രവര്ത്തിയുടെ രാജശാസനം മൂലം ഭീതിയിലായവര്ക്ക് വിശുദ്ധന് ധൈര്യം പകര്ന്നു കൊടുത്തു. ഇതേ തുടര്ന്ന് അനസ്താസിയൂസ് ചക്രവര്ത്തി വിശുദ്ധനെ നാടുകടത്തിയെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് അനസ്താസിയൂസ് ചക്രവര്ത്തിയുടെ പിന്ഗാമി വിശുദ്ധനെ തിരിച്ചു വിളിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. 105മത്തെ വയസ്സില് മരിച്ച വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അന്ത്യകര്മ്മ സമയത്ത് നിരവധി അത്ഭുതങ്ങള് സംഭവിച്ചതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
Inspired by the example of the Patriarch Abraham, who was ready to sacrifice his most beloved son for God, Saint Theodosius left his homeland Cappadocia and made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the sake of God. There he chose a holy man named Longinus as his spiritual guide. Longinus appointed Theodosius as the custodian of a church near Bethlehem. However, Theodosius did not remain there long; instead, he settled in a cave on a nearby mountain.
Because of his holiness, he became widely known, and many people placed themselves under his guidance and began the monastic life, offering their lives to God. At a place called Kathisma, he built a monastery, and he also founded three hospitals for the sick, the elderly, and the mentally ill. At a time when Emperor Anastasius was persecuting Christians who refused to accept the Eutychian doctrine—the belief in the “single nature of Christ”—Saint Theodosius spread orthodox Christian teaching throughout Palestine.
From the pulpit in Jerusalem itself, the saint proclaimed:
“Whoever does not accept the Four Ecumenical Councils as the Four Gospels shall be accursed.”
He also gave courage to those who were afraid because of the emperor’s edicts. As a result, Emperor Anastasius exiled the saint, but later the emperor’s successor recalled him.
Saint Theodosius died at the age of 105, and it is said that many miracles took place at the time of his funeral.
