Saint Oswald, who was Danish by birth, completed his education in France, at the residence of his uncle Odo, who was the Abbot of Fleury. In 959, he returned to England. In 962, Saint Dunstan consecrated him as Bishop of Worcester.

As a bishop, Saint Oswald made strenuous efforts to eliminate many immoral practices that existed within his diocese. He also founded several monasteries, among which the famous Ramsey Abbey in Huntingdonshire holds a prominent place. In 972, Saint Oswald was consecrated Archbishop of York. Nevertheless, due to the opposition of Ælfhere, King of Mercia, and in order to complete the monastic reforms he had envisioned without interruption, Saint Oswald retained direct control over the Diocese of Worcester.

Saint Oswald labored not only to raise the moral standards of the clergy, but also to increase their theological knowledge. He authored two treatises as well as numerous ecclesiastical synodal decrees. Throughout his public life, he worked closely in association with Saint Dunstan and Saint Æthelwold.

After his death in 992, Saint Oswald was commonly venerated together with these two saints. From ancient times, Saint Oswald has been honored as one of the three great saints who reformed English monastic life.
