Saint Januarius was the Bishop of Benevento. During the reign of the notorious persecutor Emperor Diocletian, around AD 304, he courageously endured brutal tortures together with the monks Sosius and Festus, as well as with his deacon Desiderius. Yet, by divine help, all of them were preserved from mutilation or destruction. Even when wild beasts were set loose upon them, they did not attack.

Later, however, they were beheaded at Pozzuoli. Their bodies were buried with honor in nearby towns. Among them, the relics of Saint Januarius remain to this day as Naples’ most treasured possession. One miracle recorded in ecclesiastical texts still continues to occur and is especially noteworthy.

When Pope Francis visited the Archdiocese of Naples last year and prayerfully kissed the reliquary containing the saint’s relics, the dried blood of the saint suddenly liquefied—an event that became major news. Cardinal Schuster, in Liber Sacramentorum (Vol. 8, p.233), wrote about this miracle as follows:

“The spectacle of the blood liquefying is something that this writer himself has witnessed closely, and I can testify to its truth. Although numerous scientific investigations have been carried out, a physical explanation of this phenomenon remains impossible.”
