Saint Mary began her life in Egypt. Her parents loved her immensely; she was the center of their little world. Mary was not an unsatisfied girl. Instead, she had everything she asked for. Everyone gave her whatever she needed. One day, however, her parents opposed a childish desire of hers. Unable to bear this, she ran away from home at the age of 12 and fled to Alexandria. Mary was extremely beautiful. Confused and unsure of what to do in the city, she remembered that a friend of her father’s lived there. She shared everything she had to say with him. He gave her shelter in his home. He ensured that her humility, manners, and repentance were nurtured, and he helped her rid herself of her childishness.
After a short while, she found someone else and stayed with him until she was attracted to his character. She then left him and started living with the new person she had met. She was truly caught in a trap. She was like a shiny coin being tossed from one side to another, from one person’s arms to another’s. Morally, she had fallen very low. Nothing could hold her back.
Once, Mary saw a group of pilgrims heading to Jerusalem. Not out of devotion but out of curiosity, she joined them on their journey to the holy city. Upon entering Jerusalem, an invisible force stopped her from entering the temple with the others. Standing before the statue of the Holy Virgin, Mary became aware of the abundance of her sins. She felt an inner calling to cross the Jordan River to find rest in her life.
Immediately, Mary set out towards the desert. With no knowledge of the place and full of fear of the world, she continued her journey. She had only three small coins in her possession, just enough for her to beg for strength. Eventually, exhausted, she reached the bank of the Jordan River.
At the holy retreat of St. John the Baptist, she took a bath and received the Holy Communion, but she did not stay there. She continued her journey, walking through the desert. She became faint and dry like a branch, but she knew that this was the only remedy for her moral decline.
During her 40 years of complete solitude, we can scarcely imagine what she endured, what she was searching for, or what experiences she faced. In that time, she endured severe drought and cold. Lying under a palm tree, her clothes tore apart, and although there were temptations to return to her sinful ways, she prayed to the Holy Virgin Mary for the strength to resist. Despite not knowing how to read, she received divine instructions about the Christian faith.
At that time, there was a monk named Zosimus. Most of what we know about Mary comes from him. He was an elderly man who decided to join a strict monastic community by the Jordan River. Every year, after the first Sunday of Lent, after the Holy Communion, he would meditate deeply and journey into the desert.
Each year, he would go deeper into the desert. This time, without resting, he walked for 20 days. After that, he sat down to pray beneath a tree. Suddenly, he saw someone pass in front of him. If it was a demon, he would need to protect himself in the name of Jesus.
And then, before him stood Mary, the repentant Egyptian woman. But only someone with true insight could recognize her in that state. She was almost completely naked. Her skin, sunburned and withered, looked like the bark of a tree, darkened in color. Her white hair hung loose behind her. When Zosimus approached her, she stepped back and cried, “I have nothing to wear. Please give me your cloak.”
Zosimus then learned about her life. He wrote it all down. He was astonished by her knowledge of the Bible. Mary told him, “Come back next year for Easter with divine mercy. Do not speak a word.” As she had requested, Zosimus complied, and she was able to receive the divine mercy.
One day, when he returned with divine mercy, he found her body. “Father Zosimus, bury this sinful woman, Mary, the most humble of all, here. Let her return to the earth. Pray for me.” She left a message in the sand, and with that, Mary left this world. This is how Zosimus came to know her name. He took his cloak back and kept it respectfully for the rest of his life. Saint Mary lived for about 78 years.
