Saint Louise de Marillac was married to Antony Le Garsine, a prominent official in the capital. After his death in 1625, Louise de Marillac became an active participant in the charitable works of Saint Vincent de Paul. Saint Vincent would occasionally visit her and entrust her with more responsibilities. Widely known as Madame Mademoiselle Le Gars, she co-founded the Daughters of Charity religious order alongside Saint Vincent de Paul. The sick rooms, their monasteries, the parish churches, and the streets of the city all became their places of service.

Louise de Marillac was the one who drafted the preliminary rule for the religious life in this order. Her intellectual sharpness and compassion played a crucial role in the growth of the order. Most of the responsibility for the training and spiritual nourishment of the novices fell on her shoulders. By the time of her death, more than forty convents of the order existed in France.

Additionally, they cared for the sick and the poor in about 26 parishes in Paris and provided shelter to hundreds of homeless women. Under her leadership, many other initiatives were established. Although physically frail, Saint Louise de Marillac’s immense strength of endurance, selfless devotion to God, and her unmeasurable assistance in the work of Saint Vincent de Paul provided him with courage and unwavering support.
