September 29:

The belief that there exist incorporeal and immaterial created beings called “angels” in the Holy Scriptures is a truth of faith. In this matter, both the testimony of the Scriptures and the unanimous opinion of tradition are equally clear.

Who are they?

St. Augustine says: “The term ‘angel’ denotes their function, not their nature. If you ask what their nature is called, the answer is ‘incorporeal.’ If you ask what their function is, the answer is ‘angel.’ Thus, considered by nature, they are incorporeal; considered by their function, they are ‘angels.’”

Angels, in their essence, are entirely servants and messengers of God. “Since they always behold the face of my Father in heaven, they act according to His commands.”

Being entirely immaterial creations, angels possess both intellect and will; they are spiritual and immortal beings. While their greatness testifies to their divine glory, they marvel at all visible creatures in their perfection. Their magnificence itself bears witness to this. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 328–330)

Angels are spiritual beings of a higher order than humans. They do not have physical bodies, nor do they depend on any material thing for their existence or actions. Angels differ from saints. They are a multitude of beings beyond numerical reckoning. Among the nine choirs mentioned in Scripture, the archangels are one of the principal orders.

The choirs of angels, in order, are:

  1. God’s Messengers (Angeli)

  2. Archangels (Archangeli)

  3. Principalities (Principes)

  4. Powers (Potestates)

  5. Virtues (Virtutes)

  6. Authorities (Dominations)

  7. Thrones (Throni)

  8. Cherubim (Cherubim)

  9. Seraphim (Seraphim)

Saint Michael

The name Michael, in Hebrew, means “Who is like God?” He is also known as the prince of the heavenly angels. Michael is often depicted as a warrior wearing armor and sandals. The name Michael appears four times in the Scriptures: twice in the Book of Daniel, once in the Epistle of Jude, and once in the Book of Revelation. In Revelation, Saint Michael and other angels are described as continually fighting Lucifer and the other demons. We seek Saint Michael’s assistance in battling Satan, saving souls at the hour of death, protecting Christians, and bringing souls to final judgment.

In many countries, this feast is celebrated as Michaelmas. It falls during the harvest season. In England, it marks the beginning of a new quarter for administrative and legal matters, university terms, the appointment of new officials, and other formal proceedings.

Michaelmas is also associated with festive and traditional foods in different countries. In the British Isles, a large goose is eaten for prosperity. In France, waffles or “gaufres” are traditional; in Scotland, Michael’s Bannock (Struan Micheli), a cake-like bread, is customary; in Italy, gnocchi is traditionally eaten on this day.

Saint Gabriel

The name Gabriel means “God is my strength.” Saint Gabriel is chiefly known as the angel chosen by God to announce His plans of salvation to humanity. Most famously, Saint Gabriel greeted the Blessed Virgin Mary with a simple yet profoundly meaningful message: “Hail, full of grace, Mary,” which has become a beloved prayer among all Christians.

Saint Raphael

The main information about Saint Raphael comes from the Book of Tobit. His mission was to accompany and comfort the young Tobit during the difficult stages of his life. Saint Raphael is believed to have stirred the miraculous waters of the pool in Bethesda. The name Gabriel means “God gives peace.”
