ഏതാണ്ട് 907ല്‍ ബൊഹേമിയയിലെ പ്രേഗ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് ആണ് വിശുദ്ധ വെന്‍സെസ്ലാവൂസ് ജനിച്ചത്. വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ചെറുപ്പകാലത്ത് തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവ് ഒരു യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. അതോടെ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭരണം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ കൈകളില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നു. തന്റെ അമ്മൂമ്മയും വിശുദ്ധയുമായ ലുട്‌വില്ല വഴിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ചത്. നല്ല ഒരു ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി മാത്രമല്ല നല്ല ഒരു ഭരണകര്‍ത്താവായിരിക്കുവാനും വിശുദ്ധ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. വെന്‍സെസ്ലാവൂസ് രാജ്യഭരണം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് തന്നെ വിഗ്രഹാരാധകരായ മറ്റ് പ്രഭുക്കള്‍ അമ്മൂമ്മയെ വധിച്ചെങ്കിലും അഗാധവും ശക്തവുമായ ഒരു ക്രിസ്തീയ വിശ്വാസം അദ്ദേഹത്തില്‍ ഉളവാക്കുവാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
പിതാവിന്‍റെ സിംഹാസനത്തില്‍ അവരോധിതനാകുമ്പോള്‍ വെന്‍സെസ്ലാവൂസിന് 18 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു. മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ ശക്തമായ എതിര്‍പ്പിനെ വകവെക്കാതെ അദ്ദേഹം സഭയുമായി ഒത്തുചേര്‍ന്ന് ധാരാളം വിഗ്രഹാരാധകരെ ക്രിസ്തീയ വിശ്വാസത്തിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് വന്നു. അനുകമ്പയിലൂന്നിയ ക്രിസ്തീയ ജീവിതത്തിന്‍റെ ഒരു നല്ല മാതൃക നല്‍കിയത് വഴി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ ‘ബോഹേമിയയിലെ നല്ല രാജാവ്’ എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടു.
തന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവനും കറപുരളാത്ത ഒരു ജീവിതം നയിക്കുവാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സാധിച്ചു. നാടുവാഴിയായിരുന്നതിനാല്‍ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ പ്രജകള്‍ക്ക് പിതാവിനു പോലെയും, അനാഥരോടും, വിധവകളോടും, പാവപ്പെട്ടവരോടും കാരുണ്യമുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ സ്വന്തം ചുമലില്‍ വിറക് ചുമന്ന്‍ പാവപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ വീടുകളില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം വിറക് എത്തിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. തടവു പുള്ളികളെ മോചിപ്പിക്കുക, തടവറകളില്‍ പീഡനം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നവരെ സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുക എന്നിങ്ങനെ പല നല്ല പ്രവര്‍ത്തികളും അദ്ദേഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ക്രിസ്തീയ പുരോഹിതന്മാരോട് വളരെയേറെ ബഹുമാനം അദ്ദേഹം പുലര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നു.
എന്നാല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ബൊലെസ്ലാവൂസ് വിഗ്രഹരാധകനായി മാറി. 929 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍ 28ന് വെന്‍സെസ്ലാവൂസ് വിശുദ്ധ കുര്‍ബാനക്കായി പോകുന്ന വഴി പള്ളിയുടെ പടിവതിക്കല്‍വച്ച് ബൊലെസ്ലാവൂസ് വിശുദ്ധനെ പിറകില്‍നിന്നു ഇടിച്ചുവീഴ്ത്തി. മരിക്കുന്നതിന്‌ മുമ്പ് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ ആത്മാവിനോട് കരുണ കാണിക്കുവാന്‍ ദൈവത്തോട് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചു.
രാഷ്ട്രീയ കാരണങ്ങള്‍ മൂലമാണ് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടതെങ്കിലും വിശ്വാസത്തോട് ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട വഴക്കാണ് ഇതിനുള്ള മൂലകാരണമെന്നതിനാല്‍ സഭയുടെ രക്തസാക്ഷികള്‍ക്കിടയിലാണ് വിശുദ്ധന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. തന്റെ 22മത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ വധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഈ രാജാവ് ചെക്ക് റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കിന്റെ ദേശീയ നായകനും മാധ്യസ്ഥനുമാണ്. ‘സ്ലാവ്’ ജനതകല്‍ക്കിടയില്‍നിന്നും നാമകരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ കൂടിയാണ് വെന്‍സെസ്ലാവൂസ്.
Saint Wenceslaus was born around 907 in Prague, Bohemia. During his childhood, his father was killed in a battle, leaving the governance of the kingdom in the hands of his mother. His grandmother, Ludmilla, provided him with his education. She taught him not only to be a good Christian but also to be a wise and just ruler. Even before Wenceslaus assumed the throne, attempts were made on his grandmother’s life by pagan idol-worshippers, but they could not shake the deep and strong Christian faith instilled in him.
Wenceslaus was 18 years old when he became the rightful heir to his father’s throne. Without yielding to the strong opposition of others, he aligned himself with the Church and brought many idol-worshippers to the Christian faith. Through his compassionate and exemplary Christian life, he became known among his people as “the Good King of Bohemia.”
Throughout his life, Wenceslaus led a life of strict discipline and simplicity. As a ruler, he showed the same care and compassion toward his subjects as a father would, extending mercy to orphans, widows, and the poor. He personally carried wood on his shoulders to deliver it to the homes of the needy. He also undertook many acts of charity, such as freeing prisoners and visiting those suffering in jails. He showed great respect toward Christian priests.
However, Wenceslaus’s brother, Boleslaus, became a pagan idol-worshipper. On September 28, 929, as Wenceslaus was going to celebrate Mass, Boleslaus attacked him from behind on the church steps and struck him down. Before dying, Wenceslaus prayed to God to show mercy on his brother’s soul.
Though Saint Wenceslaus was killed due to political reasons, his death is considered to have a religious dimension, and therefore he is honored among the Church’s martyrs. This king, who was slain at the age of 22, is regarded as the national patron and intercessor of the Czech Republic. Wenceslaus is also the first saint to be canonized from among the Slavic peoples.
