It is believed that these saints lived in the port of Alexandretta in Cilicia, in what is now ancient Turkey. Together with Saint Luke, they are known as the patron saints of doctors. In the East, Saints Cosmas and Damian are honored as the “Unmercenaries,” because they gave medical treatment free of charge. Historians describe them as twin brothers. Born in Arabia and educated in Syria, they became renowned physicians.
During the persecution carried out by Emperor Diocletian, these saints stood firm as fervent Christians. The governor of Cilicia, Lysias, ordered their arrest. Both were eventually beheaded. Their bodies were later taken to Syria and buried at a place called Cyrrhus.
From very ancient times, they have been venerated, and because of their miraculous healings, they are invoked as heavenly patrons of physicians. Emperor Justinian himself is said to have been healed through their intercession, and in gratitude he granted a special status to the city of Cyrrhus, where their relics were preserved.
In Rome, a basilica dedicated to their name was built in a very beautiful style. The lives of these saints remind us of the memory of courageous Christians who rose up from severe persecutions. Their feast is counted among the oldest feasts of the Church. In both Western and Eastern lands, these saints are greatly honored.
