Are you willing to offer your life in concentration camps for the sake of others? Are you ready to take the place of a prisoner? Are you willing to give up your comforts for the sake of a slave? Can you pray and make sacrifices for imprisoned Christians? From ancient times, Christ’s followers have done such things—especially during the Middle Ages. In those times, the enemies of the Catholic Church conquered vast Christian territories and imprisoned thousands of Christians. Many courageous efforts arose here and there to liberate these unfortunate ones.
The Blessed Mother gave a vision to Saint Peter Nolasco, instructing him to establish an order for the redemption of captives. This happened in 1218. Earlier, in 1192, some noble men of Spain and Barcelona had already formed an association to rescue the sick in hospitals and Christians captured by the Moors. Saint Peter Nolasco, together with Saint Raymond of Peñafort and King James, founded the Order of Our Lady of Mercy.
The priests of this order continually prayed for the release of prisoners, while monks and noblemen worked tirelessly for their liberation. All these successes were attributed to the heavenly intercession of the Blessed Mother, the Queen of the Redeemers. In 1198, Saint John of Matha and Saint Felix of Valois founded the Trinitarian Order, by which the Church also began organized efforts to rescue captives.
From that time until 1787, about 900,000 Christian prisoners were freed. The Mercedarians, or The Order of Our Lady of Ransom, founded by Saint Peter Nolasco, liberated around 490,736 slaves between 1218 and 1632. Later, Saint Vincent de Paul, who had once been a slave himself, together with his priests, ransomed around 1,200 Christians between 1642 and 1660 by paying 1,200,000 pounds of silver as ransom. Thousands of captives also embraced the Christian faith during this time.
In these same periods, many endured cruel persecutions and bore witness to Christ through martyrdom. All these events have been confirmed by the modern Protestant historian Bonnet-Maury, who records that no European or American military expeditions had reached those regions at that time. Rather, it was through the self-sacrifice of humble servants of the Church—such as Saint John of Matha, Saint Peter Nolasco, and Saint Vincent de Paul—that all this became possible.
