Thomas was born in 1488 into a wealthy family in Spain. From a very young age, he absorbed into his own life the compassion that his parents showed toward the poor. It was a common sight to see the boy, who had gone out wearing expensive and fine clothes, return home almost half-clothed because he had given them away to the needy.
After the death of his parents, he spent all the property he had inherited on destitute women. Thomas began his service as a teacher in a school at Alcalá, and in 1516 he joined the seminary of Saint Augustine at Villanova. He also served as a preacher at the royal court of King Charles V.
Having no interest in positions of honor, in 1544 the Church appointed him Archbishop of Valencia. He used that position for the salvation of souls and the upliftment of the poor. It is said that at the time of his death, they had to bring back the very bed he had once donated to the poor, in order to lay him on it. From the sixteenth century onwards, he has been known by the title, “The Shepherd of the Spaniards.”
