The early name of Saint Eustachius, whom the Greeks call Eustathius, was Placidus. He belonged to a noble family and was martyred in Rome under Emperor Hadrian. Before baptism, together with his wife—who was called Theopista—and their two sons, Agapius and Theopistus, the saint received martyrdom. After their conversion to the true faith, they adopted these Greek names. A man of deep compassion, before laying down his life for the faith, the saint distributed most of his great wealth to the poor.
In honor of the saint, an ancient church was built in Rome. Until the twelfth century, the saint’s bodily relics were preserved in that church. Later they were transferred to the Church of Saint Denis near Paris. In 1567, that church was plundered by the Huguenots, and the saint’s bones were partly destroyed by fire. Yet, a portion of them still remains preserved in Paris in a church bearing the name of Saint Eustachius.
The saint’s life shows us the example of the victory of goodness and integrity over sufferings, persecutions, and even death. These martyrs were great ones who, without yielding to the threats of emperors, and without regard for their possessions, friends, country, or even their very lives, held firmly to the way of justice, truth, and faith.
The Holy Church venerates Saint Eustachius as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. In times of distress, his name is invoked. Saint Eustachius is also the patron of the city of Madrid.
