Joseph was the son of a shoemaker in the town of Cupertino, Italy. Just as Mary, fully pregnant, gave birth to the infant Jesus in a stable at Bethlehem during the journey, Joseph’s mother gave birth to him in a stable. Joseph was an ordinary person who seemed incapable of fitting in anywhere. First of all, from childhood itself, he was very absent-minded.
The widow’s son would often forget even to come home for the food his mother prepared by spinning flax; instead, he wandered idly through the village streets of Cupertino. He found study extremely difficult. At the age of 17, Joseph desired to join a monastery. But because of his lack of intelligence, the Franciscan Order refused him.
Later, he found work in a Franciscan convent as a cowherd. Always praying, fasting, and absorbed in meditation at the church, this cowherd soon caught the attention of the friars. Realizing his humility, obedience, and devotion, they prepared him for priesthood. As a result, he was ordained a priest in 1628.
From the time he received holy orders, Joseph would frequently fall into ecstasies; sometimes he would even rise from the ground and float in the air. This extraordinary phenomenon made it difficult for fellow friars even to continue their meals when it occurred. For as long as 35 years, Joseph had to live apart, excluded from the choir and refectory.
Yet, crowds of the faithful came from far and wide to witness Joseph’s miraculous levitations and other marvels. In 1653, to shield him from public attention, church authorities exiled Joseph to a Capuchin convent on Mount Pietrarossa. Eventually, he was transferred to the Franciscan monastery at Osimo, but even there he was forbidden to be seen by the people. At the age of 61, Joseph of Cupertino died. In 1767, Pope Clement XIII canonized him a saint.
