In the third century, there lived in North Africa a man named Cyprian. In the early part of his life, Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus was a distinguished orator in Carthage and a prominent pagan. Among the lawyers of Carthage, Cyprian was noted for his eloquence and for his noble conduct, which brought him considerable attention.
In A.D. 246, he embraced the Christian faith. Possessing great wealth, Cyprian, after receiving baptism, sold his property and distributed the proceeds to the poor. Soon afterwards, in 248, he was ordained priest and was elevated as the bishop of the city. He proved to be an energetic spiritual shepherd and a writer of deep insight. He was able to safeguard the unity of the Church by countering heretical movements both in Africa and in Italy.
He exerted great influence in framing the Church’s code of discipline in a way that helped restore those Christians who had lapsed into apostasy. During the Decian persecution, though he went into hiding, he continued to guide the Church through letters. During the Valerian persecution of 258, he was put to death. After giving 25 gold coins to the executioner, he embraced martyrdom in the midst of his own people.
Saint Jerome speaks of him thus: “His greatness can only be described externally, for his deeds shone brighter than the sun.” Cyprian is remembered in the Church as a distinguished Father of the Church. His writings are universally respected and read in church centers everywhere. His most important works include On the Unity of the Church, On Apostates, A Collection of Letters, The Lord’s Prayer, and On the Value of Patience.
