The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is the day when, with reverence and devotion, the Church commemorates the seven sorrows of the Blessed Mother and the sufferings of the Son of God. Its origins are rooted in Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church. With the intention of fostering devotion to the holy sorrows, the Servites were the first to begin this feast. Pope Pius VII, who had been exiled and afflicted but was finally liberated through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, declared it in 1817 as a universal feast of the Church. However, this feast has a tradition that goes back as far as the twelfth century. The Cistercians and the Servites were instrumental in promoting it.
As a result, during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, this feast began to be celebrated widely throughout the Catholic Church. In 1482, it was included in the Missal under the title Mother of Mercy. In 1727, Pope Benedict XIII fixed it in the Roman Calendar on the Friday before Palm Sunday. Later, in 1913, Pope Pius X established the date of its observance as September 15.
The title Our Lady of Sorrows was given because the feast centers on the severe anguish endured by the Mother during Christ’s passion and at His death. In the seventeenth century, it came to be observed under the name The Seven Sorrows, referring to the seven swords that pierced her Immaculate Heart. The date, September 15, falls seven days after the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8). (This account is taken from Fr. Paul Haffner’s book Our Lady of Sorrows – Inside the Vatican, Sept. 2004).
This feast is dedicated to the intense sufferings endured by Mary, the Mother of God, at the passion of her heavenly Son. Having endured this deep agony, and becoming co-redeemer in her union with Christ, the Blessed Mother reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the true path of repentance.
