In A.D. 326, history testifies that Queen Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, discovered the True Cross on which Jesus had been crucified. But later, it was seized by the Persian king Chosroes. In A.D. 629, Emperor Heraclius recovered this sacred relic and brought it back to Jerusalem to be preserved. It is said that the emperor carried the captured cross upon his own shoulders as he went towards Calvary. Dressed in rich garments and adorned with special jewel-studded ornaments, the emperor bore the cross. When he reached the gates of Calvary, historians say that a miraculous event took place.
No matter how hard he tried, the emperor was unable to move forward. At that moment, Zacharias, the Bishop of Jerusalem, addressed the astonished emperor: “O mighty sovereign! Consider what connection there is between the humble attire of Jesus on His way of the Cross and the splendid royal robes and ornaments you are wearing!” Realizing the truth, the emperor immediately put on garments of penitence, and only then was he able to continue his journey.

This feast was known by many names: “Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross,” “Feast of the Lifting up of the Cross,” “Feast of the Holy Cross,” “Feast of the Holy Rood,” and “Rood Day Mass.” The liturgical celebration of the Cross is one of triumphant joy. In the Old Testament, Moses lifted up the bronze serpent on a pole; in the New Testament, this was a foreshadowing of Jesus being lifted up on the wooden cross. This day reminds us that in order to follow Christ, we must take up His Cross and remain obedient even unto death—even if that death be upon the Cross. Then we will become like the crucified Christ.
Before prayer, we make the sign of the Cross in order to place our body and soul firmly in God. After prayer, we make the sign of the Cross to remain united with God. In trial and in testing, our strength and protection lie in the sign of the Cross. In baptism, we are sealed with the sign of the Cross to mark the fullness of redemption and to show that we belong to Christ. Let us therefore look constantly to the Cross. Let us offer our body, soul, willpower, and thoughts at the foot of the Cross.
