John Chrysostom was born around A.D. 347 in Antioch. He was a man of brilliance and eloquence. Along with Saint Athanasius, Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, and Saint Basil, he is counted among the four great Doctors of the Eastern Church. As Patriarch of Constantinople, because of his courageous stand against the hypocrisy of society—especially the rich—he was forced into exile several times. While living in exile, he died in 407.
John’s father was a Latin, and his mother was of Greek descent. Before long, his mother Anthousa became a widow at the age of twenty. Without even considering a second marriage, Anthousa devoted all her care to raising her son well. She gave him the best education available at the time. While still a youth, John’s life took a decisive turn under the influence of Meletius, the Patriarch of Antioch. Meletius sent him to study at the monastic school of Diodore and later baptized him.
It was at this time that John made his decision about his future: he resolved to become a monk. Accordingly, he lived in a cave as a monk, studying the Holy Scriptures under the direction of the hermit Hesychius. However, the severe ascetic practices damaged his health, and he returned to Antioch. There he received priestly ordination and began his mission of preaching the Gospel.
For the next twelve years, the saint shook Antioch with his mesmerizing preaching and oratory. His knowledge and eloquence were extraordinary. It was during this period that he was given the name Chrysostom, meaning “Golden-mouthed,” because his words were like pure gold. In 397, when the Patriarchal See of Constantinople became vacant, Emperor Arcadius resolved to enthrone him as patriarch. Fearing that John might refuse the position, the emperor had him secretly brought to Constantinople and in 398 he was consecrated bishop and patriarch there.
What he saw there were political intrigues, extravagance, and greed. John began reducing expenses and generously aiding the poor. He built hospitals, revitalized the clergy, and restored monastic discipline. Yet, these reforms also earned him enemies. Chief among them were Empress Eudoxia and Theophilus, the Patriarch of Alexandria. Soon the city was in turmoil, and John’s life was endangered. In 404, the emperor exiled him.
The saint died in 407. In 1204, his relics were brought to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, but on November 27, 2004, Pope John Paul II returned them to the Orthodox faithful. His skull, encased in silver and jewels, is kept at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos in northern Greece, where many miraculous healings are said to have occurred. His right hand is also preserved at Mount Athos.
Two famous sayings of Saint John Chrysostom are given below:
“If the Lord grants you the power to raise the dead, He will also give you a share in His sufferings. Through working miracles, you may make yourself a debtor to Him; but through sufferings, He may become your debtor. If the only reward for suffering for the sake of God who loves you is simply the ability to suffer, is that not itself a great reward and a worthy recompense? Everyone who loves God will understand what I say.”
“Whenever you are before the altar where Jesus rests, you need not think that you are among men; for there is a whole host of angels and archangels, trembling with reverence before the Lord of heaven and earth. Therefore, when you are in the church, you must stand there with silence, awe, and respect.”
