Saint Nicholas of Tolentino was born around 1245 in Sant’Angelo, in the Diocese of Fermo. He was the fruit of his mother’s prayers. Being childless even in middle age, his mother, together with her husband, made a pilgrimage to the church of Saint Nicholas of Bari. There they prayed for a son and promised that if God granted them a child, they would dedicate him to His service. Their prayer was answered, and they were blessed with a son, whom they named Nicholas. Very soon, the boy began to display the extraordinary signs of a future saint. At the age of only seven, he would secretly pray in a cave near his home, imitating the monks he had seen in the mountains.

When Nicholas grew older, he joined the Augustinian Friars. Observing his kindness and dignified conduct, his superiors entrusted him with the duty of distributing food to the poor at the monastery gate. In 1271, he was ordained a priest and offered his first Holy Mass with great devotion. From then on, whenever he celebrated the Eucharist, it was said that he seemed to shine with the fire of his burning love.

Through his preaching and counsel, many people embraced the Catholic faith. Likewise, through his numerous miracles, countless others were led to the path of belief. Yet he never allowed the fame of these wonders to make him proud. Speaking about them, he would say: “Say nothing of this; give thanks to God, not to me. I am only a clay vessel in the hands of God, a poor sinner.”

Nicholas spent the last thirty years of his life in Tolentino. At that time, the Guelfs and the Ghibellines were in constant violent conflict there. It was Nicholas alone who was able to bring about a resolution to these hostilities. His street preaching achieved extraordinary success in this apostolic work. Saint Antoninus, who wrote his biography, noted: “He spoke only of the things of heaven.”

During the last five years of his life, Saint Nicholas was bedridden, enduring much suffering. In 1305, he died in Tolentino, surrounded by his religious community. In 1345, a devoted brother cut off the saint’s arms from his body to take them to Germany as relics. To prevent such acts from happening again, the monks concealed the saint’s body. It has never been found since. However, the severed arms are still preserved safely. It is reported that at times blood flows from them — usually as a sign preceding some calamity in the Church or the world.
