In 1581, Saint Peter Claver was born into a noble family in Catalonia, Spain. After joining the Jesuit order, and completing his priestly studies in Tarragona, he was sent to the College of Montesión in Palma. It was there that he met the humble porter, Alphonsus Rodriguez (who was also later declared a saint). Alphonsus was the one who ignited in Peter’s soul a burning desire to minister to the enslaved people of Africa. With the permission of his superiors, Peter set out for New Granada in April 1610. He never returned to his native Spain again.
By 1615, Peter had completed his education and was ordained a priest in Cartagena. This busy port city, with its sweltering heat, was where Father Peter spent most of his life. At that time, Cartagena was the largest slave market in the Americas. It was the place where thousands of Africans were brought in, kept together in holding areas, and sold to the highest bidder through public auctions.
These enslaved people, captured in Africa, were chained together in groups of six, and crammed into the lower decks of ships that could hold 100–200 people, yet were often forced to carry 600–800 slaves. The treatment they received was extremely brutal, and it was common for about one-third of them to die during the voyage.
It was among these people that Saint Peter was called to carry out his missionary work. Whenever a slave ship arrived, Peter would go there immediately to meet them. He would visit the places where they were housed, and give them food, water, medicine, and clothing. As he himself said, “We must speak to them with our hands before we speak to them with our lips.” Nevertheless, he was able to lead the vast majority of them to God. The hope of God’s promise was the comfort he offered them. It is said that nearly 300,000 people were baptized by his hands.
After twenty-seven years of dedicated service among the African slaves, Saint Peter Claver died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654. On January 15, 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized him and declared him the special patron of the Negroes. At the same time, the humble porter Alphonsus Rodriguez — who had inspired Peter to become the apostle of the slaves — was also declared a saint.
