(Our Lady of the Grape Harvest) എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്.

Today, September 8, is the blessed day on which the universal Catholic Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The details about the parents of the Blessed Mary are known from the Protoevangelium of James, written around the year 170. According to these accounts, Joachim, a highly respected man of that time, and his wife Anna had no children for many years. They considered their childlessness as a form of God’s punishment. As the result of their long years of prayer, Mary was born.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, the holiest among God’s creatures and the spiritual mother of all humanity, was born into this world to become the Mother of the Savior of the world. By virtue of her Son’s infinite merits, from the very moment she was conceived in her mother’s womb and from her birth, she was preserved from original sin, filled with divine grace, and perfectly pure. Through her, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, all graces are bestowed upon all humankind.

By the will of the Holy Trinity, through her, faith is granted to unbelievers, consolation is given to the afflicted, and to us, the followers of Christ, grace is given to grow in the likeness of the Lord. All the highest human virtues shine forth in the Blessed Mary. Just as the Church has rejoiced in her birthday since ancient times, we too rejoice on her feast day.

The Nativity of the Blessed Mother is one of the three birthdays celebrated in the Church’s liturgical calendar: the birth of Christ (December 25), the birth of John the Baptist (June 24), and the birth of the Blessed Mary. All three were born without original sin. Mary and Jesus were conceived in their mothers’ wombs without original sin, whereas Saint John the Baptist, while still in his mother’s womb, was cleansed from original sin by the visitation of the Blessed Mary.

Because September 8 marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, many thanksgiving celebrations and customs are connected with this date. In ancient Roman traditions, this day was associated with blessing the summer harvest and sowing new seeds. In France, vineyard workers called the celebration “Our Lady of the Grape Harvest.” It was customary to bring the finest grapes to the local church, present a few clusters to the Blessed Mother, and then hold a festive meal that included the new grapes.

In the Alpine regions of Austria, the celebration is called “Drive-Down Day.” On this day, the cattle that had been grazing in the high mountain pastures were brought down to their winter stalls in the valleys. In some parts of Austria, in honor of the Blessed Mother’s birthday, there is also a tradition of giving milk and any leftover food to the poor.

We celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Mother as the first dawn of God’s plan of salvation. The Blessed Mother holds a special place in the history of mankind’s redemption. Moreover, God entrusted to her the greatest mission ever given to any of His creatures. Therefore, we too can rejoice that the Holy Mother of God is also our Mother. In the Litany of the Blessed Mother, let us call her by one of her most beautiful titles: “Cause of Our Joy.”
