വിശുദ്ധ ക്ളോറ്റില്‍ഡായുടെ മൂത്ത മകനും, ഓര്‍ലീന്‍സിലെ രാജാവുമായിരുന്ന ക്ളോഡോമിറിന്റെ പുത്രനായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡ്. 522-ലായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ജനനം. ബുര്‍ഗുണ്ടിയില്‍ വെച്ച് വിശുദ്ധന്റെ പിതാവ് കൊല്ലപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് വെറും മൂന്ന്‍ വയസ്സ് മാത്രമായിരുന്നു പ്രായം. എന്നിരുന്നാലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മൂമ്മ വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലോറ്റില്‍ഡാ വിശുദ്ധനേയും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രണ്ട് സഹോദരന്‍മാരേയും പാരീസില്‍ അത്യധികം സ്നേഹത്തോടു കൂടിത്തന്നെ വളര്‍ത്തി. എന്നാല്‍ അവരുടെ അതിമോഹിയായ അമ്മാവന്‍ ഒര്‍ലീന്‍സ് രാജ്യം സ്വന്തമാക്കുകയും അത് തങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി വിഭജിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു, അതിനായി വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡിന്റെ രണ്ട് സഹോദരന്‍മാരേയും സ്വന്തം കരങ്ങളാല്‍ ക്രൂരനായ ആ അമ്മാവന്‍ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയുണ്ടായി.
ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ദൈവനിയോഗത്താല്‍വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡ് ആ കൂട്ടക്കൊലയില്‍ നിന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും, പിന്നീട് ലോകത്തിന്റെ ഭൗതീകത ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ദൈവസേവനത്തിനായി സ്വയം സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആശ്രമപരമായ ജീവിതം നയിക്കുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അതേതുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ പാരീസിനു സമീപം സന്യാസജീവിതം നയിച്ചു വന്നിരുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ സെവേരിനൂസ് എന്ന സന്യാസിയുടെ ശിക്ഷ്യത്വം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. വിശുദ്ധ സെവേരിനൂസിന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്നുമാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡ് സന്യാസവസ്ത്രം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നത്.
പിന്നീട് ലോകത്തില്‍ നിന്നും അകന്ന് മാറി ഏകാന്തമായ ജീവിതം നയിക്കണമെന്ന ആഗ്രഹവുമായി വിശുദ്ധന് പ്രോവെന്‍സിലേക്ക് പോവുകയും അവിടെ രഹസ്യമായി താമസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ കാലക്രമേണ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആശ്രമം പൊതുജന ശ്രദ്ധ ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചതോടെ വിശുദ്ധന് പാരീസിലേക്ക് തിരികെ പോരുകയും, പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തവിധം ആഹ്ലാദാരവങ്ങളോടു കൂടി അവിടത്തെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ വിശുദ്ധനെ സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അവിടത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ നിരന്തരമായ അപേക്ഷയുടെ ഫലമായി 551-ല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് പാരീസിലെ മെത്രാനായിരുന്ന യൂസേബിയൂസിന്റെ പക്കല്‍ നിന്നും പൗരോഹിത്യ പട്ടം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. വിശുദ്ധ ശുശ്രൂഷകളുമായി കുറേക്കാലം അവിത്തെ ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ചിലവഴിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് വിശുദ്ധന് പാരീസില്‍ നിന്നും രണ്ട് കാതം അകലെയുള്ള സെന്റ്‌ ക്ലൌഡിലേക്ക് പോവുകയും, അവിടെ ഒരാശ്രമം പണികഴിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ ലോകത്തെ ഭൗതീകതയില്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മാക്കളെ നഷ്ടപ്പെടുമോ എന്ന് ഭയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കുറേ ദൈവഭക്തരായ ആളുകളെ ഒരുമിച്ചു കൂട്ടി ഒരു സന്യാസ സമൂഹമായി അവര്‍ ജീവിച്ചു.
വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡിനെയായിരുന്നു അവര്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ സുപ്പീരിയര്‍ ആയി പരിഗണിച്ചു വന്നിരുന്നത്, വിശുദ്ധനാകട്ടെ തന്റെ വാക്കുകളാലും, ജീവിത മാതൃകയാലും അവരെ നന്മയിലേക്ക് നയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ രാജ്യത്തെ മാത്രമല്ല അയല്‍രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പോലും വേണ്ട ഉപദേശങ്ങളും, പ്രചോദനവും നല്‍കുന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ഒരിക്കലും മടികാണിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഏതാണ്ട് 560-ല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് കര്‍ത്താവില്‍ അന്ത്യനിദ്ര പ്രാപിച്ചു. ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ ആദ്യകാല രാജകീയ കുടുംബങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിശുദ്ധരാക്കപ്പെട്ട രാജകുമാരന്‍മാരില്‍ പ്രഥമനായിരിന്നു വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലൌഡ്.
Saint Cloud was the eldest son of Saint Clotilda’s eldest son, Clodomir, the King of Orléans. He was born in 522. When his father was killed in Burgundy, Saint Cloud was only three years old. Nevertheless, his grandmother, Saint Clotilda, raised him and his two brothers in Paris with great love and care.
However, their greedy uncle desired to seize the kingdom of Orléans and divide it among himself, and to achieve this, he cruelly murdered Saint Cloud’s two brothers with his own hands. By a special divine providence, Saint Cloud escaped this massacre. He then decided to renounce the material world and dedicate himself entirely to the service of God, living the monastic life.
Soon after, he placed himself under the guidance of Saint Severinus, a monk living near Paris, and received the monastic habit from his hands. Later, with a desire to live a life of complete solitude away from the world, the saint went to Provence and lived there in secrecy. However, over time, his hermitage began to attract public attention, and so Saint Cloud returned to Paris, where the people received him with unexpected joy and enthusiasm.
Due to the persistent requests of the local people, in 551 Saint Cloud received priestly ordination from Eusebius, the Bishop of Paris. For some time, he served in that church, carrying out holy ministries. Later, he moved about two leagues away from Paris to a place now known as Saint-Cloud, where he built a monastery. Gathering together many devout people who feared losing their souls to the materialism of the world, he formed them into a monastic community.
They regarded Saint Cloud as their superior, and he guided them towards holiness through both his words and the example of his life. The saint never hesitated to give counsel and inspiration, not only to the people of his own country but also to those of neighboring lands. Around the year 560, Saint Cloud entered into eternal rest in the Lord. He was the first among the early French royal family members to be canonized as a saint.
