Saint Eleutherius was the unanimously accepted abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mark near Spoleto. He was also known as a man specially gifted with the grace to perform miraculous works. As a result of the discipline he maintained in his monastery, the saint was able to deliver a child who was possessed by a demon. On one occasion, he said:
“Since this child is one of God’s servants, the devil will be afraid to touch him.”

As if to treat these words as mere boastfulness, the devil entered the boy again and began to torment him. The venerable monk, who was very attentive to the voice of his conscience, humbly admitted his fault. Together with his community, he fasted and prayed until the child was fully freed from the grip of Satan.

Another incident recorded in history about the saint took place when the great Pope Saint Gregory was suffering from such severe physical weakness that he could not observe the fast associated with Easter. At that time, Eleutherius and his companions were in the habit of going to the Church of Saint Andrew for penitential prayer. The Pope requested him to take him along so that he could pray to God for the restoration of his health.

With tears, Eleutherius prayed. When the Pope came out of the church, he was filled with renewed vigor. He then began the fast. It is also believed that Eleutherius once raised a dead man back to life. After retiring from his duties in the monastery, he spent his final days in the Monastery of Saint Andrew in Rome, where he departed this world in the year 585.
