According to tradition, around 1130, Saint Rosalia was born in the court of King Roger II of Sicily, the daughter of Sinibald, a descendant of Charlemagne. The Virgin Mary appeared to her and warned that her extraordinary beauty could endanger her very life, and therefore it was better for her to renounce worldly life. At that time, she was only 14 years old.
Taking her crucifix and a few books, she fled from the palace at night. Two angels—one in the guise of an armed warrior, the other disguised as a pilgrim—accompanied the young girl to the top of Mount Quisquita. There, they left her at the entrance of a snow-covered cave and disappeared. She remained hidden there for several more months. One day, the angels appeared again and told her that her parents had intensified their search for her, and advised her to move to another hiding place. They then took her to Mount Pellegrino and settled her there.
There, she immersed herself in acts of penance and, sustained by the grace of the Holy One, miraculously spent the remaining 16 years of her life until she passed away at the age of thirty. After years of fruitless search, her relics were finally discovered in the seventeenth century, enclosed in a crystal casket. The recovery of her relics and their ceremonial procession are celebrated in a grand manner by the people of Palermo.
Saint Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo. In her honor, two festivals are celebrated every year by the people there, one of which has been declared a public holiday. This celebration is both an expression of gratitude for saving the city from the plague of 1625 and for the many miraculous healings attributed to her afterward.
The highlight of this feast is the magnificent procession, preceded by the solemn sound of drums. In a spectacular display, a giant chariot carrying the sacred relics of the saint is drawn through the city by forty mules, accompanied by musicians, prayer chants, hymns, and shouts of devotion. It is a truly marvelous sight—the canopy of the chariot rising as high as the rooftops of the houses on either side! Fireworks resound everywhere! Trumpet music fills the air without pause! The excitement remains at its peak throughout the five days of celebrations.
