Saint Gregory was born in Rome in AD 540. Before turning 30, Gregory served as a senator and chief magistrate of Rome. Five years later, he resigned from all his positions and became a monk. He converted his own residence into a Benedictine monastery and established six other monasteries. At the age of 50, he was elected Pope. During the 14 years from 590 to 604, he accomplished numerous achievements for the Church.
When he learned that British children were being sold in Rome as slaves, he sent forty monks, including Saint Augustine of the monastery attached to Canterbury Cathedral, to “turn the angelic children into angels.”
England owed its Christianization to Pope Gregory. When the fierce Lombards created turmoil in Europe through their invasions, he was able to deal with them successfully. When Rome itself was under threat of attack, he personally visited the Lombard king. In the same way, he simultaneously took great care of the holiness of priests, the maintenance of Church discipline, the material needs of the people of Rome, and the spiritual needs of the worldwide Christian community.
He abolished the practice of charging money for Church services. He emptied his own treasury to ransom captives held by the Lombards, to aid persecuted Jews, and to care for those suffering from plague and famine. Because of such charitable works, he was praised with the titles “Father of the City” and “Joy of the World.”
Another of his major achievements was the reform of the Church’s liturgical books. Many of the beautiful prayers recited in churches today were composed by him. The famous “Gregorian Chant”—simple, precisely structured hymns—remains a treasured contribution of this great Pope to Christian music. His biblical commentaries had a profound influence on the faithful of the Middle Ages.
On March 12, 604, the great Saint Gregory passed away. His tomb is located in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Saint Gregory is venerated as the patron and heavenly intercessor for England, the West Indies, choirboys, educators, gout sufferers, masons, music, musicians, choirs, singers, stonecutters, teachers, Popes, students, scholars, protection against plague, protection against gout, and protection against fever.
