Saint Agricola was the son of Magnus, a Roman senator. At the age of fourteen, Saint Agricola entered a monastery and gained renown for his extraordinary knowledge in both the path of devotion and the path of wisdom. It is believed that he joined the monastery after the death of his mother. In the meantime, his widowed father received a divine calling to become a monk. Sixteen years later, Magnus was elevated to the position of Bishop of Avignon.
While holding this office, Magnus had the rare privilege of appointing his own son—who had already been serving as a priest for many years—to assist him in public administration as a coadjutor bishop. Ten years later, Saint Agricola succeeded his father and became known for his zeal in preaching the Gospel and protecting the innocent.
Like Saints George, Acacius, and Margaret of Antioch, he is depicted with a dragon because of his combat against the devil. In this battle, he triumphed not through his own frail human willpower, but under the protection of the banner of Christ the Savior’s Cross, through prayer, fasting, and steadfast faith.
As Bishop of Avignon, Saint Agricola was a holy shepherd who labored diligently for the sake of his flock. In 1647, Saint Agricola was declared the Patron of Avignon.
