September 01:

Saint Giles was born into a noble family in Athens, the capital of Greece. After the death of his parents, fearing fame and followers, he fled his native land and came to France. There, he lived the life of a hermit in a cave within a forest near the mouth of the River Rhône. It is said that every day a doe came to the cave to give him her milk.

One day, the doe, chased by the king’s hunters, fled toward the cave entrance. Following her, they discovered Giles and his secret place of meditation. They shot an arrow at the doe, but it struck Giles in the thigh instead. As a result, he remained crippled for the rest of his life. Later, at the request of King Theodoric, he built a monastery and became its first abbot. This monastery later became known as Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. Eight years later, in 712, Saint Giles passed away.

In Normandy, France, there exists a belief that women who are unable to bear children will conceive if they sleep with a statue or picture of Saint Giles near them. Many churches in England were built in his name for the benefit of the crippled. Saint Giles was regarded as the protector of the poor, and it was customary to give alms to the destitute in his name.

As proof of this tradition, there was a custom in which criminals on their way to execution were stopped at the gates of Saint Giles’ Hospital and given a bowl of wine known as “St. Giles’ Bowl.” Saint Giles is also included in the list of the “Fourteen Holy Helpers.” Prayers are offered to these fourteen saints together because they are believed to possess special power to help in trials and difficulties. Each saint also has their own separate feast and memorial day.

The collective commemoration of these saints was held on August 8. However, according to the 1969 revision of the Roman Calendar, this joint feast was abolished. People who are beggars, nursing mothers, monks, the physically disabled, blacksmiths, the crippled, lepers, those without fertility, and those without sexual ability may pray for the intercession of this saint.
