Today we celebrate the ‘Eve’ of all the saints. On November 1, 1484, Pope Sixtus IV declared this day a holy day in honor of all the saints, asking for it to be celebrated with all solemnity and vigil prayers. This celebration, known as “All Hallows’ Eve” or “Halloween,” was also established as a day of rest. Although it is not included in the Catholic liturgical calendar as a solemn feast, it is intrinsically connected to the annual feast day.

The three consecutive days—Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day—symbolize the spiritual communion with the saints. As soldiers of the Church, we pray for the Church and for the souls in purgatory, especially on All Souls’ Day and throughout the month of November. We rejoice in the triumph of the Church in heaven and also intercede through the mediation of the saints.

Although the special vigil prayers and the 80-day celebration were discontinued in 1955, this marks the beginning of the commemoration of All Saints. In England, the saints and the holy were known as “hallowed,” which is why the day is called “All Hallows’ Day.” The night preceding the feast, or “e’en,” became popularly known as “All Hallows’ Eve,” which eventually evolved into “Halloween.”

Since it is the night before All Saints’ Day, it is customary to observe vigil prayers and fasting on this day. Associated with this night are numerous culinary traditions and dishes such as pan cakes, boxty bread, boxty pancakes, barmbrack (an Irish fruit bread), and colcannon (a mixture of cabbage and boiled potatoes).

In England, this celebration is also known as “Nutcrack Night.” Halloween serves as preparation for the two upcoming feast days. However, demonic symbols and witchcraft have no place in Catholic celebrations. It is a good practice to pray for a holy death, for the souls in purgatory, and for the sick, connecting these prayers with the saints.
