Although historical records about these saints are very limited, the legends about their heroic deeds give us insight into their extraordinary efforts to bring people to God. They willingly shed their blood without pause, glorifying the body of Christ, and because they are believed to have achieved martyrdom together during their missionary work, the Church celebrates their feast on the same day.
Today, the Church prays in gratitude:
“O God, who opened the ears of the deaf world to hear your Word through the work of the Apostles, proclaiming your love and news about your Messiah throughout their lives, grant us to receive your message as they did.”
Saint Simeon is often depicted in images with a sword, symbolizing his martyrdom.
Saint Jude is portrayed as the “craftsman of the house of God.” Saint Paul the Apostle frequently referred to him with this title. Jude’s missionary work qualifies him as one of God’s principal servants. Beyond this, Jude has another distinctive feature: through his father Cleophas/Alphius, he is believed to be the cousin of Saint Joseph the Patriarch and thus the brother of Jesus.
The Gospel of John provides valuable information about him. In the account of the Last Supper, Jesus says:
“Whoever loves me will love my Father also; and I will reveal myself to him.”
Jude then asks,
“Lord, how can you reveal yourself to us and not to the whole world?”
Jesus replies,
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and dwell with him. What you hear are not just my words, but the words of my Father.”
Various ancient records differ regarding the place of Jude’s death, and there is no definitive historical evidence about the exact location. It is said that relics of these saints are preserved in the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome and the Basilica of Saint Cernin in Toulouse.
