The Phoenician brothers from Tyre, Edesius and Frumentius, were the first to bring the Christian faith to Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia). While still children, they embarked on a sea voyage to Abyssinia with their uncle Metropius. Saint Frumentius later became the first bishop of Axum and the apostle of Abyssinia, around the year 383.
On the coast of the Red Sea, their ship was attacked, and all the passengers except Edesius and Frumentius were killed by the local people. The two boys were captured and taken as slaves to the king of Axum, around 316. However, they soon gained the favor of the king, who eventually freed them before his death and appointed them to positions of trust.
After the king’s death, the queen widow assigned them to educate her son Ezana and assist in the administration of the kingdom. Edesius returned to Tyre after Ezana came of age, but Frumentius remained in Abyssinia and devoted himself entirely to spreading Christianity. Using his influence, Frumentius encouraged Christian merchants, obtained permission for public gatherings, and established places of worship.
Through his efforts, many inhabitants converted to Christianity. When Edesius remained in Tyre, Frumentius traveled as far as Alexandria to request from Saint Athanasius the appointment of a bishop and several priests for Abyssinia. Recognizing Frumentius as the right person for this task, Athanasius consecrated him as bishop of Abyssinia in 328, likely between 340 and 346. Frumentius then returned to Abyssinia and began his episcopal ministry in Axum. Even the pagan king Ezana embraced the Christian faith and was baptized.
Frumentius worked tirelessly to spread Christianity throughout Abyssinia, building numerous churches. The local people addressed him as Abuna (“Our Father”) or Abba Salama (“Father of Peace”), titles still used for the head of the Ethiopian Church.
In 365, Emperor Constantius wrote to King Ezana and his brother, requesting that Frumentius be replaced by the Arian bishop Theophilus, but this request was ignored. Saint Frumentius’s feast is celebrated on October 27 by the Latin Church, November 30 by the Greek Church, and December 18 by the Coptic Christians. He is also credited with producing the first Ethiopian translation of the Scriptures.
