During the reign of Emperor Trajan in the 3rd century, Saint Evaristus began his episcopacy. According to tradition, he was of Greek descent from Antioch, although some sources claim he was the son of a Jewish man named Jude from Bethlehem. Historians differ regarding the exact length of his tenure as bishop and the authenticity of writings and legal documents attributed to him.
Ancient scholars, however, credit Saint Evaristus with dividing Rome into distinct districts and appointing fifteen bishops, seven priests, and two deacons, though there is no historical evidence to verify these claims.
In his first encyclical addressed to the African bishops, Evaristus mentions appointing seven deacons to ensure the truth of their preaching. He did not favor accusations against his bishops, though the Roman Church held the authority to depose them if errors were found.
His second encyclical compared the relationship between a bishop and his diocese to that of a husband and wife. Some documents attributed to him have been proven to be forgeries, making many details of his ministry uncertain. Nonetheless, he lived until the rise of the Antonine Empire. According to Church tradition, he was martyred and buried on Vatican Hill.
