According to tradition, Saints Crispin and Crispinian were born into a noble family in Rome in the 3rd century A.D. Being Christians, they fled persecution to protect their faith. Their refuge was in Soissons, where they spent their days preaching Christianity among the Gauls and their nights making shoes. It is sometimes said that they were twin brothers, although there is no historical confirmation of this claim.
Besides earning their living through their trade, they used their income to help the poor. Their success, however, attracted the attention of Rictus Varus, the governor of Gaul in Belgium, who cruelly persecuted them, tied them by the neck, and threw them into the river. They survived this ordeal, but ultimately, the emperor captured and beheaded them.
According to Gabriel Meurier, the legends surrounding them include many details that are historically unreliable, compiled from various sources. Another tradition claims they were born into a noble Roman-British family in Canterbury. When they came of age, their father, who had incurred the emperor’s wrath, was executed. To protect the sons and provide them with training, their mother sent them to London.
During their journey, they reached a shoemaker’s workshop in Faversham and decided to settle there instead of continuing their travels. A metal plaque in the town still commemorates this connection. To preserve their memory, the public church in Strood is named “Crispin and Crispinian.” However, this legend does not explain how the brothers ultimately became martyrs or how their veneration began.
