Saint Anthony Mary Claret was born in 1807 in Sallent, in the diocese of Vic, Catalonia, Spain, during the time of Napoleon’s invasion of Spain. His father was a weaver, and although Anthony received training in manual labor, he chose a religious path and entered the seminary in Vic in 1829. He was ordained a priest in 1835 and initially served as a parish priest in his own locality. Later, he went to Rome to pursue missionary work.

Although he briefly joined the Jesuit seminary, he had to leave due to physical ailments. Returning to Spain, he continued his pastoral and missionary work as a parish priest, preaching in rural areas, organizing meetings for religious workers, and writing extensively—authoring around 150 works. Some jealous priests, uneasy with the success of his ministry, opposed him, prompting Anthony to leave Catalonia in 1848 for the Canary Islands.

A year later, he returned to Catalonia and resumed his missionary activities. In 1849, he founded the “Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary” (also known as the Claretians) with six priests. In 1850, at the recommendation of Queen Isabella II of Spain, he was appointed Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba.

For the next seven years, he undertook extensive apostolic visits and actively campaigned against the enslavement of black people, which subjected him to continual threats, including attempts on his life. In 1857, he was recalled to Spain as the queen’s confessor, a role that allowed him to influence episcopal nominations, establish a center for ecclesiastical studies at Escorial, and gain official recognition for religious communities in Spain.

In 1869, he was in Rome preparing for the First Vatican Council. When Queen Isabella II was exiled, Anthony accompanied her. Under the orders of the Spanish governor, he was confined to a Cistercian monastery in Fontfroide, where he died at the age of 63. His physical remains were later returned to Vic.
