According to tradition, Ursula was the daughter of a Christian king in Britain. In her honor, Clematius, a senator of that time, rebuilt a church in Cologne, where a group of virgin martyrs had been venerated. It seems that these virgins were so highly respected that a church was built solely under their name. However, the exact identity and number of these virgins remain unclear. From this vague reality, various legends about Saint Ursula developed.
Saint Ursula, having bought three years’ delay from an unwanted marriage to a pagan prince, is said to have journeyed with about 11,000 virgin companions from Rhine to Basel, through Switzerland, and then by sea to Rome. On their return journey, around 451, she reportedly refused to marry the pagan leader, and as a result, they were all killed at Cologne by the local pagans.
Another legend states that when Emperor Clement Maximus attacked Britain and Gaul, many Britons and soldiers emigrated to America and settled there. The ruler of these settlers, Sinan, requested Dionotus, the king of Cornwall, to send his daughter Ursula as Sinan’s wife along with about 10,000 noble virgins and 60,000 common virgins. Their fleet was wrecked, and all were killed.
