After Jacques Cartier’s discovery of Canada in 1534, the first missionaries to travel to Canada and North America were Jesuit priests from France. Their evangelization extended from Nova Scotia to Maryland. Among them were Isaac Jogues, Saint Jean de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Noël Chabanel, Charles Garnier, Anthony Daniel, René Goupil, and John de Lalande. The first six were priests, and the last two were lay brothers. They carried out missionary work among the Iroquois and Huron Indians.

These missionaries endured severe persecution and were ultimately martyred in Orleansville, New York. Their martyrdoms are believed to have occurred between 1642 and 1649. Saint Isaac Jogues’ martyrdom was followed ten years later by the birth of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. These martyrs are recognized as co-patron saints of Canada.

It took about a century after Cartier’s arrival in 1534 for missionaries to reach Canada, with the aim of bringing the local population to the Christian faith and establishing a new Christian presence. Their main opposition came from English and Dutch settlers. After being captured and severely tortured, Isaac Jogues returned to Paris and reportedly said to his superior, “Father, even if thousands must die, I desire to see God’s will accomplished.”

In his missionary journal, he wrote, “These sufferings are great, yet God is greater than them.” Official records, particularly the notes of Saint Jean de Brébeuf—disciple of the great Jesuit spiritual writer Louis Lalemant—record his words:

“Like other martyrs, I have endured cruel tortures, and an irresistible desire to become a martyr has arisen within me. Jesus, my Savior, I promise You that as long as I have strength, I will not waste a single opportunity to become a martyr for You. By Your boundless mercy, someday You will grant this to Your faithful servant. Then, with complete joy and spiritual delight, I will embrace my death. My God, it grieves me deeply that I have not yet been able to lead these native Gentiles fully to know You and to convert them from sin to You.”

This testimony reflects their unwavering faith, courage in the face of persecution, and selfless dedication to spreading the Gospel in a hostile land.
