പഴയകാല ക്രൈസ്തവരക്തസാക്ഷികളില് പ്രഥമ സ്ഥാനമാണ് മെത്രാനും രക്തസാക്ഷിയുമായ വിശുദ്ധ ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസിനുള്ളത്. ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസ് തിയൊഫൊറസ് എന്നും ഈ വിശുദ്ധൻ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അന്തിയോക്കിൽ നിന്നും റോമിലേക്കുള്ള ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അവസാന യാത്ര ഒരു കുരിശിന്റെ വഴിയെ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു. ഈ യാത്രയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയ കത്തുകൾ കുരിശിന്റെ വഴിയിലെ എഴ് പാദങ്ങളുടെ പ്രതിരൂപമായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. ക്രിസ്തുവിനെപ്രതി അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അപാരമായ സ്നേഹവും ക്രിസ്തുവിനോട് കൂടിച്ചേരുവാനുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹവും തീക്ഷ്ണതയും ഈ കത്തില് പ്രകടമാണ്.
അപ്പോസ്തോലിക കാലഘട്ടത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ള പുരാതന ക്രൈസ്തവ ദൈവശാസ്ത്രത്തെപ്പറ്റി നമുക്ക് വിവരങ്ങൾ നൽകുന്ന ഏഴ് അമൂല്യ രത്നങ്ങളാണ് ഈ കത്തുകൾ. വിശുദ്ധ ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസ് ഏത് വർഷമാണ് മരിച്ചതെന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് വിവരങ്ങള് ലഭ്യമല്ല. ഒരുപക്ഷെ ട്രാജൻ ഭരണ കാലത്ത് രക്ത ദാഹികളായ ജനതകളെ ആനന്ദിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി 10,000 ത്തോളം പടയാളികളുടെയും 11,000 ത്തോളം വരുന്ന വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുടെയും ജീവൻ ബലി കഴിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നടത്തിയിരുന്ന ‘വിജയാഘോഷ’ വേദികളിൽ എവിടെയെങ്കിലും ആകാമെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
വിശുദ്ധന്റെ മഹത്വപൂർണ്ണമായ രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വത്തിന് വേദിയായ രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വ മണ്ഡപം ഒരുപക്ഷേ ‘കൊളോസ്സിയം’ ആകാം. സിംഹങ്ങളുടെ കൂർത്ത പല്ലുകളാൽ ഛിന്നഭിന്നമാക്കപ്പെട്ട് ക്രിസ്തുവിനു വേണ്ടി വിശുദ്ധ ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസ് രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വം വരിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് ചരിത്രകാരന്മാര് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അവസാന വാക്കുകളായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത്- “സിറിയ മുതൽ റോം വരെ കരയിലും കടലിലും എനിക്ക് വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളോട് ഏറ്റുമുട്ടേണ്ടതായി വന്നു. പകലും രാത്രിയും ഏതാണ്ട് പത്തോളം പുള്ളിപുലികൾക്ക് നടുവിൽ ഞാൻ ബന്ധനസ്ഥനാക്കപ്പെട്ടു. നല്ലതായി പെരുമാറും തോറും ക്രൂരന്മാർ ആയികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഇവരാണ് എന്റെ കാവൽക്കാർ. ഇവരുടെ ക്രൂരമായ പെരുമാറ്റങ്ങൾ എനിക്കുള്ള നല്ല ശിക്ഷണമായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും അവസാന വിധി ഇനിയും ആയിട്ടില്ല. എനിക്കുവേണ്ടി ഇപ്പോഴേ തയ്യാറാക്കി നിർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുമായി മുഖാമുഖം കാണേണ്ടി വരും”.
“ഞാനവയോട് പെട്ടെന്നുള്ള എന്റെ വിടവാങ്ങലിനായി അപേക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കാം. മറ്റ് സാക്ഷികൾക്ക് സംഭവിച്ചത് പോലെ എന്റെ ശരീരത്തെയും ആര്ത്തിയോടെ തിന്നുവാനായി ഞാനവയെ ക്ഷണിക്കും. എന്റെ മേൽ ചാടി വീഴുന്നതിനു അവ മടിക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ എന്നെ തിന്നുവാനായി ഞാനവയെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കും. എന്റെ കുഞ്ഞ് മക്കളെ, ഇത്തരം വാക്കുകൾക്ക് എന്നോടു ക്ഷമിക്കുക. എനിക്ക് നല്ലതെന്താണെന്ന് എനിക്കറിയാം. കാണപ്പെട്ട വസ്തുക്കൾ ഒന്നും ഞാനാഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നില്ല. എനിക്ക് ക്രിസ്തുവിനെ കണ്ടെത്തണം. തീയും കുരിശും, വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളും, ഒടിഞ്ഞു നുറുങ്ങിയ എല്ലുകളും, പൂർണ്ണമായും കീറിമുറിക്കപ്പെട്ട ശരീരം, സാത്താന്റെ പീഡനവും, എനിക്ക് ക്രിസ്തുവിലെത്താൻ കഴിയുമെങ്കിൽ ഇവയെല്ലാം എന്നെ കീഴ്പ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊട്ടെ”.
Among the early Christian martyrs, the foremost place is held by Saint Ignatius, the bishop and martyr. This saint is also known as Ignatius Theophorus. His final journey from Antioch to Rome was reminiscent of the Way of the Cross. The letters he wrote during this journey are considered symbolic representations of the seven steps of the Cross. These letters reflect the intense love he had for Christ and his burning desire to unite with Him.
These letters are regarded as seven precious gems that provide us with insight into early Christian theology after the apostolic era. The exact year of Saint Ignatius’s death is not known. It is believed that he might have been martyred during the “victory celebrations” held under Emperor Trajan, in which tens of thousands of soldiers and about 11,000 wild animals were sacrificed to entertain the bloodthirsty populace.
The grand arena of his martyrdom was likely the Colosseum. Historians record that Saint Ignatius was torn apart by the jaws of lions for the sake of Christ. His reputed last words describe the ordeal he faced:
“From Syria to Rome, I have been brought before wild beasts, by land and by sea. Day and night, I have been bound in the midst of about ten tigers. The cruel guards who keep watch over me become instruments of my correction, yet the final judgment is not yet. Soon I shall face the wild beasts prepared for me.”
“I may need to beg for a swift departure from them. As happened with other martyrs, I will invite them to consume my body with eagerness. If they hesitate to attack me, I will encourage them to devour me. Forgive me, my little children, for such words. I know what is good for me. I desire nothing of what I see around me. I must find Christ. Let fire and the Cross, beasts and broken bones, torn flesh, and Satan’s torments—all be subject to me if it will bring me to Christ.”
These words reveal the extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, and total self-offering of Saint Ignatius, who embraced suffering and death as the ultimate path to union with Christ.
