Saint Hedwig was born in 1174 in Bavaria, Croatia, as the daughter of a nobleman. She led a life marked by deep devotion to God and compassion for others. Hedwig was married to Henry, the Duke of Silesia. The couple had seven children, and Hedwig outlived all her children except for her daughter Gertrude. Using her dowry, she continuously encouraged her husband to establish a Cistercian monastery.
Their daughter Gertrude later became the abbess of this monastery in Trzebnica. Saint Hedwig showed particular care for the poor and the sick, providing them with spiritual guidance and education. Even during winter, she always walked barefoot, never wearing shoes.
According to a story, her husband once gave her a pair of shoes with the instruction, “You must wear these.” However, Saint Hedwig continued to carry them in her hands rather than put them on her feet. After her husband’s death, she renounced all worldly comforts and entered the monastery she had founded in Trzebnica.
Saint Hedwig passed away on October 15, 1243. She is venerated as the patroness of Poland. She is sometimes confused with another Saint Hedwig, whose feast day is celebrated on February 28 and who was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
