Saint Callixtus was born in the second century A.D. as the son of a Christian slave. His father’s owner was also a Christian. Appointed as the overseer of a Christian financial institution, he fled the city when the institution failed. Soon afterward, he was captured and sent to work in a quarry. Later, he was released upon payment of a ransom and returned to Rome.
Pope Zephyrinus entrusted him with managing church properties and overseeing the burial of martyrs in the underground catacombs along the famous Appian Way in Rome. These catacombs are still known today as the Cemetery of Saint Callixtus.
Eighteen years later, in 217, Callixtus succeeded Pope Zephyrinus to become the next pope. As pope, he introduced comprehensive reforms in the Church’s approach toward repentant sinners, welcoming them back into the Church. He also safeguarded the Church and its faith against heretical doctrines such as Adoptionism and Modalism, which contradicted the belief in the Holy Trinity.
Opponents of his reforms, during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus, had him imprisoned. While in prison, he suffered cruel punishments including prolonged starvation and beatings. Ultimately, Saint Callixtus I was martyred by being thrown headfirst into a deep well. He attained martyrdom in 223 A.D.
