Saint Edward, the last king of Anglo-Saxon descent and the grandson of Saint Edward the Martyr, spent most of his youth in hiding with his uncle, a Norman leader. Although he lived in a sinful and worldly environment, he succeeded in preserving his purity and holiness. In 1042, he ascended the throne of England. By the grace of God, he established a rule founded on the principles of Christian morality and virtue.
His first great endeavor was to revive the Christian faith among his people. As part of this mission, he built numerous churches throughout the kingdom and invited monks and priests to England to strengthen the faith. Though he consented to marriage under pressure from others, he remained chaste and pure throughout his married life. Saint John the Evangelist was his most beloved saint. He never turned away anyone who came to him seeking help.
One day, one of his devoted followers approached him disguised as a beggar. Since the king had no money with him at that moment, he gave the beggar his ring as alms. Some time later, Saint John appeared to him and returned the ring, telling him that his death was near. Hearing this, the saintly king asked the people to pray for him. As foretold, on January 5, 1066, Saint Edward peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.
