October 12:

Saint Wilfrid was born into a noble family in Northumbria. He received his education at Lindisfarne. From an early age, he showed great interest in gaining knowledge and in the monastic way of life. As a young man, he travelled first to Canterbury and later to Rome. On his return journey, he founded monasteries at Ripon and Stamford and became well known as the chief advocate of Roman customs at the Synod of Whitby in A.D. 664.

Not long afterward, Saint Wilfrid was appointed Bishop of York. He then left for France to lead a life of greater spiritual dedication. In his absence, Chad was consecrated Bishop of York and served in that office for about four years. During this time, Wilfrid founded a monastery at Oundle and also served as Bishop of Mercia. Later, Archbishop Theodore consecrated him as Bishop of York.

For nine years, Saint Wilfrid governed this diocese. He also founded a monastery at Hexham. During this period, he incurred the displeasure of Egfrith, the King of Northumbria. As a result, Archbishop Theodore, without Wilfrid’s knowledge or consent, divided his diocese into four parts. To appeal this injustice, Wilfrid went to Rome. His petition was accepted and approved there, but when he returned to Northumbria, he was accused of forging the Pope’s official decree (Pope’s Bull) and was imprisoned.

After being released from prison, the saint went to Sussex, where he preached the Gospel among the pagans for about five years. During this time, Sussex suffered a severe famine that lasted for three years. The people were in great distress and despair due to hunger and hardship. Moved by compassion, Wilfrid taught them how to fish. This increased their respect and affection for him. Through his efforts, they received many blessings, and he also inspired in them a deeper longing for heavenly grace. His tireless work among them began to bear fruit.

He succeeded in establishing a monastery at a place called Selsey. When Archbishop Theodore lay on his deathbed, he repented of his previous actions against Wilfrid and designated him as his successor in Canterbury. Wilfrid declined this position, but through this reconciliation, he secured his safe return to Northumbria. However, his enemies there continued to make his life difficult, so he went to Mercia, where he was consecrated Bishop of Lichfield.

There he laboured diligently for about ten years. Nevertheless, the Northumbrian council, composed of bishops and nobles, summoned him for trial and declared him guilty. Once again, Saint Wilfrid appealed to Rome. By this time, even in Northumbria, the authority of Roman judgments had begun to be acknowledged. His petition was accepted in Rome, and a decision was made in his favour.
