Saint John XXIII, whose baptismal name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, was born on November 25, 1881, in Sotto, a village in the Diocese of Bergamo, Italy. He was the fourth of fourteen children in his family. His was a family of tenant farmers who lived by cultivating the land. His eldest uncle, Saverio, who never married, was the head of the household and managed the family affairs. It was this uncle who became Angelo’s godfather and religious mentor.

Through his deeply Christian family environment and the devout parish life under Father Francesco Rebussini, Angelo received strong formation in the Christian faith. In 1892, he entered the Bergamo Seminary. It was here that he began the habit of writing spiritual notes, which he continued until his death. These notes were later compiled into a book titled Journal of a Soul.

Under the guidance of Father Luigi Isacchi, the spiritual director of the Bergamo Seminary, he joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1896. On May 23, 1897, he prepared the rule of life for his membership in the order. From 1901 to 1905, he studied at the Roman Pontifical Seminary. On August 10, 1904, he was ordained a priest at the Church of Santa Maria in Monte Santo, located in Piazza del Popolo, Rome. In 1905, when Giacomo Maria Radini-Tedeschi was appointed the new bishop of Bergamo, Father Roncalli was chosen as his secretary.

When Italy entered the war in 1915, he served as a sergeant in the Army Medical Corps and as a military chaplain caring for wounded soldiers. After the war, he founded a Student House to provide for the spiritual needs of young people. In 1919, he was appointed the spiritual director of the seminary, but in 1921, Pope Benedict XV called him to Rome and appointed him as president of the Missionary Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

In 1925, Pope Pius XI appointed him as Apostolic Visitor to Bulgaria and elevated him to the episcopate as the titular bishop of Areopolis. The episcopal motto he chose, Obedience and Peace (Oboedientia et Pax), became the guiding principle of his entire life. On March 19, 1925, he returned to Bulgaria and was consecrated as bishop. There, he served as Apostolic Representative until 1935. During this period, he visited the local Christian communities and maintained cordial relations with other Christian groups.

In 1935, he was appointed Apostolic Delegate to Turkey and Greece. His ministry among Catholics in those countries was exceptionally active. Moreover, his respectful manner of dialogue and interaction with the Orthodox Church and the Islamic world drew wide admiration. In December 1944, Pope Pius XII appointed him as the Papal Nuncio to France.

After the death of Pope Pius XII, on October 28, 1958, he was elected as the next pope, taking the name John XXIII. Through his five years of pontificate, he presented to the entire world the image of a gentle, dignified, and dynamic shepherd. By visiting prisoners and the sick, he revealed to the world the Christian model of mercy.

His encyclical Mater et Magistra (“Mother and Teacher”), which discussed the relationship between Christianity and social progress, received worldwide acclaim. He convened the Roman Synod, established a commission to renew the Code of Canon Law, and summoned the Second Vatican Council. Seeing the goodness of God reflected in him, the faithful lovingly called him “Good Pope John.” Filled with deep faith in Christ and a fervent desire to embrace Him, Pope John XXIII passed peacefully to eternal rest in the Lord on June 3, 1963.
