Francis Borgia, a nobleman of Catalonia and the third Superior General of the Jesuits, was born in 1510. On his father’s side, he was the grandson of Pope Alexander VI, and on his mother’s side, he was the grandson of the son of Ferdinand the Catholic. His saintly life was, in a sense, an atonement for the sins committed by his ancestors.
As a high-ranking noble and governor in the court of Emperor Charles V, he was greatly respected in society. On May 1, 1539, following the death of the beautiful Empress Isabella, when he saw her disfigured face as her body was being taken to Granada, he resolved to renounce all worldly pleasures and to serve the King of Kings, God Himself. In 1546, after the death of his wife, he joined the Society of Jesus and decided to give up all material comforts and honors to live a life of solitude and spirituality.
Even Emperor Charles V was deeply influenced by the saint’s humble way of life. The Emperor’s decision to abdicate the throne was clearly inspired by the example of Saint Francis Borgia. Leading a life of strict discipline and self-mortification, Saint Francis Borgia used to call himself “a poor sinner.” In 1565, he became the Superior General of his religious order. The saint died in Rome.
