John Henry Newman, a Christian scholar of the 19th century, was born in London in 1801. In his youth, he showed an intense desire for spiritual exploration and entered Oxford University to study theology. Gradually, he became an Anglican priest, a distinguished fellow of Oriel College, and a leader of the Oxford Movement, which studied the roots of the Catholic faith in England. In 1842, while writing his essay An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, he was drawn toward the Catholic faith.

In 1845, he joined the Catholic Church, and on June 1, 1847, he was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in Rome. After his ordination, with the encouragement of Pope Pius IX, he founded a religious congregation in England in the name of Saint Philip Neri. In 1852, he was appointed rector of the Catholic University of Ireland in Dublin, a post he held until 1854. In 1879, Pope Leo XIII elevated him to the rank of Cardinal.

In 1890, he died at the Edgbaston Oratory. The process of his canonization began in 1958. The healing of Deacon Jack Sullivan, who was afflicted with a spinal disease, was miraculously attributed to the intercession of Cardinal Newman, and Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized this in July 2009. Subsequently, on September 19, 2010, he was beatified at Cofton Park near Birmingham.

What particularly drew the Pope’s attention was not only his contribution to presenting Christ before the reformed society but also the compassion he showed toward the poor, the sick, and those in prison. On October 13, 2019, in a ceremony held at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis canonized him as a saint. His feast day is especially celebrated in England and Wales.
