Saint Demetrius was born into a wealthy Christian noble family. He was a brave warrior. Emperor Maximian appointed him as the governor of Thessalonica. But as soon as the emperor learned that Demetrius was a Christian, he had him imprisoned in a public bathhouse, and in 306 A.D., he was executed with a spear at Sirmium (present-day Serbia). After his death, it is said that in 586, the saint appeared during a battle for the protection of Thessalonica.

In that century, two churches were built in his honor—one in Sirmium and the other in Thessalonica. It is believed that the custom of venerating the saint spread to Sirmium after Leontius, the chief magistrate of Illyricum, took charge of the civil administration of Thessalonica. Both of the aforementioned churches were built by Leontius.

In the Balkan regions, nearly two hundred churches are dedicated to this saint. It is also said that oil continually flows from his relics. It is believed that the practice of venerating the saint spread to Serbia through Leontius after he assumed civil authority in Thessalonica.

Even before the church in Thessalonica was built, Demetrius had already begun to be honored as a saint. In 441, Sirmium was destroyed during an invasion. As a result, the second church in Thessalonica became the main center for those who honored the martyred Saint Demetrius. Numerous pilgrims continued to visit this church. However, in 1917, the church was destroyed in a fire, but it was later rebuilt in a way that could accommodate a large number of people.

As time passed, Demetrius became widely known as the “Great Martyr,” and the renown of his life spread. The earliest written records about the saint date back to the ninth century. According to these, the order to execute the saint was given directly by Emperor Maximian. Based on later information, it is believed that the saint was either a governor (as mentioned in the list of Roman martyrs) or, like Saint George, a soldier-saint.

Saint Demetrius is known as one of the patron saints of the Crusaders. His feast day, October 26, is celebrated with great solemnity in the Eastern Churches. His name is also included among those who prepared the Byzantine liturgy. In Ravenna, Italy, he is likewise honored, and there, an ancient church is dedicated to him in his name.
