It was Pope Saint Pius V who, in thanksgiving for the naval victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1570 against the Turks, began the custom of celebrating this day as the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. That victory was the fruit of the continuous recitation of the Rosary. It was this triumph that prevented Islamic forces from gaining dominance over Europe.
On October 7, 1571, the memory of this victory, gained through the intercession of prayers to the Mother of God, was preserved by including the invocation “Mother of God, Help of Christians” in the liturgical prayers. It is noteworthy that in 1716, when the Turks were defeated at Belgrade, it happened on the very same day of the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.
It was Pope Leo XIII who added the famous prayer, “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us,” to the liturgical order of prayers. From that time until today, Catholics all over the world continue to recite this prayer. This feast is truly an act of thanksgiving to the Blessed Mother for the countless blessings and graces received through the Holy Rosary.
All the Popes of the modern era have urged the faithful to be devoted to the Rosary. The Holy Rosary is a prayer with deep layers of meaning. Through the spread of the Rosary, the blessings of God are poured abundantly upon the Church. Inspired by the Bible, the Rosary is a prayer that fosters love and union with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God—she who is both the helper in God’s saving plan and the mother of Christ, the Son, who alone can grant salvation to all.
