Saint Francis was born in 1181 in Assisi, a town in Umbria, to Bernardo, a wealthy cloth merchant. Being the son of a rich man, Francis received a good education. In his early years, he was immersed in the worldly pleasures and led a very luxurious and indulgent life. At the age of twenty, during a war between the people of Assisi and Perugia, he fought against the Perugians and was captured as a prisoner.

While in captivity, he had a vision of Jesus, which completely changed the course of his life. After being released from prison, he resolved to abandon his previous way of life and to follow the path of Jesus Christ. He renounced all his wealth and embraced a life of poverty, making the Gospel the guiding principle of his existence. His father strongly opposed this decision, which led to Bernardo disowning him and removing him from his inheritance.

Humble and self-effacing, Francis wore worn-out rough garments and begged in the streets for food. His life and words influenced many people. In 1209, with the Pope’s blessing, he founded the religious order known as the “Friars Minor” (Franciscans). Within ten years, around five thousand people had joined this order.

Among the faithful, his life was considered the humblest. Later, in 1212, he joined forces with Saint Clare of Assisi to establish the foundation for the “Poor Clares,” a female religious order known today as the “Poor Sisters.” In addition, he also established the Third Order (The Third Order of Penance) which included laypeople. It was to him that Jesus first granted the Five Wounds (the Stigmata), which occurred in 1224.

Because he led the most humble of lives, Francis never received priestly ordination and lived his entire life as a deacon. He addressed all living creatures, God’s creations, as “brother” or “sister.” His intense love for God earned him the title “Seraphic” Francis.

Due to his extreme penances and ascetic practices, his body became weak, further affected by the Stigmata. Saint Francis died on October 4, 1226, in Portiuncula, Italy. Even during his lifetime, he was universally acclaimed as a saint, and it did not take long for him to be officially canonized. Within two years, Pope Gregory IX declared him a saint.
