കുലീനമായ ജന്മം കൊണ്ടും, കാണുന്നവർക്കെല്ലാം ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നുന്ന പ്രസാദകരമായ മുഖഭാവം കൊണ്ടും അനുഗ്രഹീതനായിട്ടാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ജൊറാർഡ് ഈ ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് രംഗപ്രവേശം ചെയ്തത്. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ലൗകിക ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥശൂന്യത മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. നായാട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞ് തിരിച്ചുവന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ദിവസം, ചാപ്പലിൽ ധ്യാനത്തിന് കൂടി. ധ്യാനത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ആത്മഗതം പോലെ ഒരുവിട്ടു, “വേറെയാതൊരു ചുമതലകളുമില്ലാതെ, രാവും പകലും ദൈവത്തെ സ്തുതിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവന്റെ സന്നിധിയിൽ സദാ വസിക്കുന്നവർ എത്ര സന്തോഷവാന്മാർ”.
ജെറാർഡിന് വിശുദ്ധ പത്രോസിന്റെ ഒരു ദർശനം കിട്ടി. ദര്‍ശനത്തില്‍ വിശുദ്ധ യുജിയസിന്റെ തിരുശേഷിപ്പുകൾ ബൽജിയത്തിലെ ബ്രോണിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരാനാണ് വി. പത്രോസ് അവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. ആ കൃത്യം നിർവഹിച്ചശേഷം ജെറാർഡ്, വിശുദ്ധ ഡെനീസിന്റെ ആശ്രമത്തിൽ ആത്മീയ ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇവിടെ വച്ച്, അദ്ദേഹം വൈദിക വൃത്തിയിലേക്ക് ഉയർത്തപ്പെട്ടു. ബ്രോണിലുള്ള സ്വന്തം എസ്റ്റേറ്റിൽ, ഒരു സന്യാസാശ്രമം സ്ഥാപിച്ച ശേഷം ഏകാന്തവാസത്തിനായി പള്ളിയോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം സ്വന്തം ആവശ്യത്തിന് ഒരു നിലവറ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചു.
എന്നാല്‍ അധികനാൾ ഈ ഏകാന്തവാസം തുടരാൻ ദൈവം അനുവദിച്ചില്ല. വി.ഗിസ്ലെയിൻ ആശ്രമത്തിലെ കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം ക്രമപ്പെടുത്തുവാനുള്ള ദൈവവിളി ജെറാർഡിനുണ്ടായി. കാരണം, അവിടുത്തെ സന്യാസിമാർ പണം വാങ്ങിയതിനു ശേഷം വിശുദ്ധന്റെ കബറിടം തുറന്ന് ദർശനം അനുവദിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഈ തെറ്റായ പ്രവര്‍ത്തി വിജയകരമായി അവസാനിപ്പിച്ച ശേഷം, ഫ്ലാണ്ടേഴ്സിയിലുള്ള സകല ആശ്രമങ്ങളും നവീകരിക്കാനുള്ള ചുമതല അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു.
വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ടിന്റെ നിയമപ്രകാരം, ഏകദേശം 20 വർഷം, അദ്ദേഹം നവീകരണ പരിഷ്ക്കാര ജോലികൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി കഠിനാദ്ധ്വാനം ചെയ്തു. അവസാനകാലഘട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കീഴിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന മുഴുവൻ ആശ്രമങ്ങളിലും ഒരു അവസാന സന്ദർശനം കൂടി നടത്തിയ ശേഷം, അന്ത്യവിശ്രമം കൊള്ളുവാൻ ബ്രോണിലെ തന്റെ നിലവറയിലേക്ക് വിശുദ്ധ ജെറാർഡ് മടങ്ങി.
Saint Gerard entered this world with noble birth and a blessed, pleasing countenance that attracted everyone’s admiration. From the very beginning of his life, he realized the emptiness of worldly pursuits. After returning from hunting one day, he went to the chapel for meditation. In deep prayer, he reflected:
“How joyful are those who, without any other duties, spend day and night praising God and dwelling always in His presence.”
Gerard received a vision from St. Peter. In this vision, St. Peter instructed him to bring the relics of St. Eugenius to Brogne in Belgium. After accomplishing this mission, Gerard began his spiritual life at the monastery of St. Denis, where he was ordained a priest. Returning to his estate in Brogne, he established a monastic community and also built a private cell near the church for solitary prayer.
However, God did not allow him to remain in solitude for long. Gerard received a divine call to reform the affairs of the monastery at St. Ghislain, because the monks there were accepting money from pilgrims in exchange for granting them access to the saint’s tomb. After successfully correcting this corruption, he was entrusted with the responsibility of renewing all the monasteries in Flanders.
Following the Rule of St. Benedict, Gerard spent nearly 20 years dedicated to monastic reform and renewal. In his later years, after visiting every monastery under his care one final time, he returned to his cell in Brogne to spend his final days in rest and prayer.
