October 02:

Every human being on Earth has a guardian angel. This angel observes us and helps guide us toward salvation. From the very moment of birth, the angel begins its mission; even before birth, it is under the protection of the mother’s guardian angel. This protection continues throughout life—the period of earthly training—until the moment of death. After death, the angel accompanies our soul to Purgatory or Paradise, eventually becoming our companion in Heaven.

Angels are messengers and servants sent by God. The word “angel” in Greek means “messenger.” Though invisible to human eyes, they help us on our earthly journey—assisting in our work and studies, protecting us from dangers, supporting us during trials, and safeguarding us from physical harm. The Church has long taught that each soul is assigned a personal guardian angel.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you, in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also confirms the spiritual reality of angels:

  • “From the moment of birth until death, humans live under the protection and intercession of angels, especially their guardian angels” (CCC 328).

  • “To lead each believer to life, a guardian angel is assigned as companion and protector” (CCC 336).

The Church gives thanks to God for sending these helpful angels, particularly the archangels—St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael—whose feast is celebrated on September 29, while the feast of all guardian angels is observed today. The first celebration of this feast began in Spain in the 16th century, and it was extended to the universal Church in 1670.

St. Bernard said:
“Be aware that your angels serve you at every step, so act with care in all your deeds, for they are participating in your work. Wherever you live, whatever corner you are in, honor your guardian angel. Do you doubt their existence because you cannot see them? Remember that their reality exists beyond what eyes can perceive.”

Brothers and sisters, with tender love, we must honor and love God’s angels. One day, they will be our companions in Heaven. The angels sent to us now will continue to be our guides and protectors. With such protectors at our side, what is there to fear? They cannot be defeated or deceived; they guard us unfailingly. They are wise, intelligent, and powerful.

If we follow their guidance and stay close to them, we will dwell safely in the sanctuary of the Most High. So, even when severe trials and heart-wrenching sorrows touch you, call upon your guardian angel for help and intercession, invoking their aid at midday or whenever needed.
