‘Story of a soul’ എന്ന ആത്മകഥ അവളുടെ ആന്തരിക ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് അനേകര്‍ക്ക് ഇന്ന്‍ വെളിച്ചം പകരുന്നു. 1997-ൽ പോപ്പ് ജോൺപോൾ രണ്ടാമൻ, വിശുദ്ധയ്ക്കു Doctor of the Church എന്ന ബഹുമതി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.

Today is the feast day of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, known widely as the “Little Flower,” beloved for her childlike devotion to Jesus and her holy face. She was the youngest of five daughters, born on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France, to Marie Thérèse Martin. Her father was a watchmaker, and her mother was a seamstress. When Thérèse was four years old, her mother, Zélie, passed away from breast cancer. She grew up in a model Christian family environment. Even as a small child, she was drawn to the contemplative life.

In 1887, Thérèse applied to enter the Carmelite convent, but her request was initially denied due to her young age. Two of her elder sisters were already members of the same convent. At the age of fifteen, she was granted permission to join the Carmelite convent. For the next nine years, she lived an ordinary monastic life; during this period, there are no recorded accounts of extraordinary miracles or extreme ascetic practices.

She carried out her daily tasks with perfect fidelity, cultivating complete trust in God’s providence and love, and displayed a pure, childlike confidence, coupled with a constant readiness to serve others. Through this, she attained the highest degree of sanctity.

Thérèse had deep love for the Church and great zeal for bringing people closer to it. She prayed especially for priests. At the age of twenty-four, on September 30, 1897, she passed away from tuberculosis. In 1925, Thérèse was canonized as a saint. She fulfilled in her life her promise: “On earth, I will do good, and I will gain my heaven.”

Her memoirs, published posthumously, gained immense popularity and were translated into numerous languages. This work played a significant role in elevating the Little Flower to sainthood. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, continues to illuminate the inner spiritual life of Thérèse for readers today. In 1997, Pope John Paul II honored her with the title Doctor of the Church.
