The first disciples to follow Christ were Andrew, the brother of Saint Peter, and John. The Gospel gives a very simple yet beautiful account of their first encounter with Christ (John 1:35–42). Though Andrew was not among the Lord’s closest apostles — Peter, James, and John — the Gospels nonetheless reflect his quiet faith and devotion. While Scripture itself does not speak at length about him, studies based on the Acts of the Apostles reveal Saint Andrew’s immense love for the Savior and for the Cross.

The Holy Church honors this saint in the Holy Eucharist and in the daily liturgical prayers. From the time of Pope Gregory the Great, Saint Andrew’s name began to be especially venerated; it was included in the canon of the Mass and in the Liberia (the ancient liturgical texts). The story of Saint Andrew’s martyrdom is known to us through accounts based on the Acts of the Apostles.

According to these accounts, a pagan judge demanded that Saint Andrew offer sacrifice to the idols. The saint replied:

“I offer sacrifice to the one eternal and most merciful God, for He alone is God.
I do not offer the flesh of bulls or the blood of goats,
but upon the altar I offer the Lamb invisible to human eyes.
All the faithful partake of this Lamb and are nourished by Him,
yet the Lamb who is offered remains whole and lives forever.”

Enraged by these words, Aegeas, the judge, ordered that the saint be imprisoned. The faithful who had gathered around the prison could easily have freed him, but Saint Andrew earnestly begged them not to do so, calming them with gentle words. He longed deeply for the crown of martyrdom.

As he was led to the place of execution, Saint Andrew looked upon the cross and cried out in prayer:

“O most blessed Cross, so long desired by my heart,
now I rejoice, for my soul shall embrace you!
Receive me, the disciple of Him who hung upon you,
for through you He has redeemed the world.”

Soon after, they crucified him upon a cross shaped like the letter ‘X’. For two days, the saint hung upon the cross, preaching the teachings of Jesus to all who stood near. At last, he gave up his spirit, dying in a manner similar to his Lord, and was united with Christ.

Saint Andrew’s martyrdom holds great significance, for through it, the Church has received the mystery of the Holy Cross — a sign of love, sacrifice, and eternal victory.
