Saint Saturninus, the Bishop of Toulouse, was martyred on November 29, A.D. 257. Around the year 245, following the instruction of Pope Fabian, Saint Saturninus set out from Rome to Gaul to proclaim the Gospel. Nearly a few years earlier, around A.D. 250, Saint Trophimus, the first bishop of Arles, had successfully preached the Gospel there during the consulship of Decius and Gratus.

Saint Saturninus began his episcopal ministry in Toulouse. According to Fortunatus, through his preaching and miraculous works, Saint Saturninus brought many idol-worshippers to the Christian faith. Apart from the details of his preaching and miracles leading up to his martyrdom, little else is known with certainty. About fifty years after his death, a writer described his life and deeds in an account that forms the basis of what we know today.

From these descriptions, it is understood that the saint had gathered his flock in a small church within the city, which stood between his residence and the city center. It was in this church that he would deliver his sermons and prophecies. On one occasion, as he passed along his usual route, some demons attacked a mute man, taking on the saint’s appearance. The pagan priests who witnessed this accused the saint before the city authorities of bringing misfortune upon the idols and their worship.

One day, while he was walking along his usual path, these priests seized him and dragged him violently toward their temple. They demanded that he offer sacrifices to the idols he had allegedly insulted, saying that only his own blood could appease them if he refused. But Saint Saturninus, fearless and steadfast, boldly replied to the idolaters:

“I worship only one God. To Him alone will I offer praise and sacrifice.
Your gods are demons who delight not in the blood of bulls, but in the destruction of your souls.
Why should I fear them, when, as you yourselves admit, they tremble before the Christians?”

Infuriated by his fearless words, the idol worshippers, driven by rage and the temptation of the devil, heaped insults and violence upon him. After various tortures and humiliations, they bound his feet to a wild bull that had been brought for sacrifice and set the animal loose from the temple.

The bull charged down a steep hill, dragging the saint behind it. The violent force caused his skull to split open, and his brains were scattered upon the ground. Thus, his soul, full of peace and joy, ascended to the heavenly kingdom of glory.

The wild bull, however, continued dragging his sacred body until the ropes finally broke. His flesh and blood were scattered over the open fields of the city. Two pious women, seeing what had happened, carefully gathered the saint’s remains and hid them in a deep pit to protect them from further desecration. His body remained there in a wooden coffin until the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Later, Bishop Hilary of Toulouse built a small oratory over the spot. Toward the end of the fourth century, Bishop Silvius began the construction of a beautiful church in honor of the martyred Saint Saturninus. His successor, Exuperius, completed and consecrated the building, transferring the saint’s holy relics into the new church with great solemnity and devotion.

To this day, these precious relics are venerated with deep reverence in that sacred place. It is generally believed that the martyrdom of Saint Saturninus took place during the reign of Emperor Valerian, around the year A.D. 257.
