Saint Stephen was born in Constantinople between 714 and 715. During the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V (Copronymus), a period marked by religious persecution and the destruction of Christian icons, Stephen stood at the forefront in defending and preserving the sacred images and symbols venerated in the churches of Constantinople. He was a monk at a monastery on Mount Auxentius, near Chalcedon.
In 761, because of his activities on the island of Proconnesus in the Sea of Marmara, his work was prohibited by imperial order. Three years later, Stephen was summoned before the Emperor and subjected to interrogation. During the questioning, Stephen took out a coin bearing the imperial seal and showed it to the Emperor, asking,
“If it is wrong to insult the image of the Emperor, how much more grievous is it to destroy and burn the images of Christ and His Mother?”
He then threw the coin to the ground and trampled it, symbolically exposing the Emperor’s hypocrisy.
Enraged, Emperor Constantine ordered that Stephen be imprisoned. Together with about 300 monks, Stephen spent eleven months in confinement. Even in prison, they lived as if in a monastery—praying, fasting, and upholding their spiritual discipline. Stephen remained steadfast in his faith and convictions, refusing to compromise with imperial demands.
Eventually, the Emperor’s officials put him to death. Although the Emperor himself hesitated to execute Stephen, it is said—just as in the case of King Henry II and Saint Thomas Becket—that Stephen’s unyielding words and courage provoked his persecutors to carry out the killing.
Along with Saints Basil, Peter, Andrew, and about three hundred fellow monks, Saint Stephen the Younger was martyred for the defense of the holy icons and for his unwavering faith in Christ.
